Oftentimes, I receive requests for headshots where the potential client tells me, “I just want a cheap headshot that I can use for an audition; nothing fancy. “Cheap” may get you just that; a less than acceptable result. (Mom always said, “You get what you pay for”) If all you are basing your decision on is price, then don’t be surprised when your final image resembles that of a washed out, lackluster passport photo that was taken at a CVS drugstore. Is that really the way you want to project yourself?
It pays to remember that a headshot of any kind (actor, model, professional, executive, etc) is a branding tool. You are selling yourself to someone and you only get one chance to make a GREAT first impression! Think about the many ways in which you will be utilizing that image. Will it be printed on business cards? Posted on social media? Donning your LinkedIn profile for hundreds of prospective employers to see (or the customers of your business)? Pictured on the header of the company financial newsletter, shared with thousands of subscribers? Or, in the case of models and actors, your images are actually printed out as 8×10 headshots/comp cards and handed directly to casting directors! The quality couldn’t be more important! This is your opportunity to put forth the best of you; to show people who you are through imagery. Really, no matter the industry, you owe it to yourself to invest in a proper headshot. It can be the difference between a potential client choosing you, or your competition.
Your image is more powerful than you think. Think about times when you have made decisions about utilizing a particular person/service based on someone’s image on a business card. (Real Estate Agents, Mortgage Brokers, Photographers, Artists, Models, Insurance Reps, Bankers, etc). Go ahead and peruse the many faces of LinkedIn. It’s pretty easy to spot the profile pics that can be categorized as “bathroom selfies” or “my cousin Vinnie’s wedding” or “the other half of that photo was some drunk guy I met at a party”. In my day job, I am a professional recruiter for a living. So, you can imagine the amount of unfavorable profile photos that I see, day in and day out, as I’m scouring through profiles and online resume’s! It’s a crime…I digress…
During my client consultations I ask a series of questions that help me gain a complete understanding of their needs. At the conclusion of that consultation, my clients usually begin to realize that they really need (and want) much more than “a cheap headshot” if they intend to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Whether an actor or a model, professional headshots are in investment in your career and they should be updated regularly (at least once every year or two, depending on how often you change your looks or the types of roles you are auditioning for). In order to get the most value out of your well-spent money it makes the most sense to utilize a professional who understands how to properly dress/prepare you for the session as well as how to properly light you, pose you and engage with you during your session, in order to achieve the best results possible. In my studio we utilize a professional makeup artist for all of our female clients, in order to properly prepare their skin for the studio lighting which helps to enhance their best features and ensures a quality final result. It also adds an element of fun and some pampering to their day! Our sessions include multiple outfits, 1-2 backdrops, a private online proofing gallery, 2 final digital files (completely edited) and very fast turnaround times. No hidden fees, no surprises. Just great service, quality results and a great experience.
